Enjoy learning about the lovely sounds one might hear when in Puerto Rico
from their unique tree frogs. Be prepared to retell what you have learned about these frogs
when you finish reading.

Puerto Rico’s Raining Frogs
by Evelyn Steele

If you look on the globe southeast of Florida,
you will find my home, Puerto Rico, where we
have the so-called, “raining frogs.”

They are known as the coquí tree frogs. The
coquí are easy to locate because we can hear
their gentle “ko-kee” sound everywhere.

These tree frogs have
a musical sound, which
is not just an occasional
sound but an explosion of
tones that float through
the air. Moreover, they
are associated with
Puerto Rico and some
might see them as our island’s mascot, even
though they are plain and not very decorated.
The tree frogs like our coastal climate and
atmosphere and are often found overhead in the
forest canopy. You might even find a shower of
these “raining frogs” if you wait in the forests
like their predators do. To avoid predators, the
tree frogs do not climb down trees just like they
went up. Rather, to stay protected, they jump
out of trees and float down. Because they are
almost weightless, they appear to be flying.
I hope you can imagine that the coquí are not just
at my home or in the forest or near tourist

hotels. They are throughout our island with
tones you can’t ignore. When I hear the tree
frog, I never feel lonely, as it reminds me of
home. I look forward to hearing them today
and then again, tomorrow.

Hole Punch It
Hole Punch the /oa/ Sound Spellings

“Can you recall any of the spellings of the /oa/ sound? The key sentence about the boat and Joe
may help jog your memory.” Cut out strips of paper to create 4 strips of 2 rows each. Ask the
student to hole punch in the space next to every /oa/ sound spelling. Don’t hole punch out the
letter themselves. If you don’t have a hole puncher, they could be marked with a Dot It paint pen or
marker. “See if you can get faster as you do each strip.”

If you haven’t tried them yet
“soap boat” and
“robot and m r. m ole” from
www.s ta rfa l l .c om are good
for the /oa/ sound.
