A fun thing to do
on a day that is fine

and plen ty of twine.
Off to the field,
ight
when the wind is just right
Send the kite high –
up, up on its flight.

The Flight of the Kite

Feel the tug on the twine;
the kite dips and it dives.
Watch it dance and wave
as it glides in the sky.

try as you might,
There’s no thing like be ing
a kid with a kite.

Make the Connection
The following phrases are famous idioms. An idiom is an expression whose figurative meaning does not
correspond to the literal meaning of the words that make up the expression.
Note for teachers: each phrase has a literal meaning illustration and a figurative meaning illustration. Fold
the figurative meaning back before reading with students. Read the idiom first, look at the literal meaning
illustration, and discuss whether it makes sense. Then unfold and look at the figurative meaning illustration to
discuss the actual meaning of each phrase.
