Compound Words
The English language is creative and interesting. Some words called compound
words are made by combining two smaller words to make a new word. Often the
smaller words are part of the new meaning, but sometimes they aren’t. For example,
the words “butter” and “fly” combine to make “butterfly.” But does butter have
anything to do with a butterfly?
Read the compound words below and draw a line to match them to their meaning.
1. cow + boy = cowboy
2. drive + way = driveway
3. honey + moon = honeymoon
4. horse + shoe = horseshoe
5. after + noon = afternoon
6. boy + hood = boyhood
