Write It builds on the foundations we’ve already established through letter-sounds, phonemic segmentation and manipulation, and sound-symbol processing. But here’s what makes Write It different from all the other Word Work activities: it doesn’t show the word to the student. Rather, the student must create its representation from her own mind—a demanding retrieval task that accelerates learning and permanently wires spelling patterns into memory. On the surface, Write It is just a simple dictation activity, yet the challenging task is a great teaching and assessment tool.
