What I Did Last Summer
by Evelyn Steele

Last August I went with my friends Laura
and Paul to see the circus. Laura’s mom is a
lawyer, and they recently moved here from
Australia. Paul’s dad was an astronaut, and he
drove us in a very fancy automobile he had just
bought. It was such a cool August day that it
almost seemed like autumn.
The circus was able to draw a huge audience. So,
even though we started at dawn, we still stood in
line on the lawn before
the show began. As
the line moved, I saw
some animals behind a
smaller red tent.

My jaw dropped when
I saw the claws of
the lion. Fortunately,
he was in a cage!
We all enjoyed the
whole show because the performers were so
talented and without fault. The show taught me
that I just need to practice more to be good at
anything. Even if I feel exhausted, I should not
quit or just crawl away!

Act It Out

The /aw/ Sound

Cut up these cards and let your student draw one at a time. Support her to “Blend As You Read.”
Then she can act out what the card says. You may give points for words where she uses the Blend As
You Read approach. But you get a point for her impulsive guesses.
Keep the cards and play
another day, especially if
your student enjoyed this!
