The “ow” Spelling

Flex It
DIRECTIONS:

The spelling “ow” can be two sounds: /ow/ as in “cow” and /oa/ as in “go.” Sometimes you have
to try one sound and if it doesn’t work, try another sound. We call this “Flex It.” Read these words
with the “ow” spelling. Sort them by which sound of “ow” they have.

Morph It

The /ow/ Sound

Once you can read certain words, you can more easily read the same words with special endings
added. The verb (action word) “look” can be changed into “looks” just by adding an “s.” This ending
“s” means the action is taking place now, in the present. When you add “ed” to the end of “look,” it
becomes “looked” which takes place in the past. For example, “Yesterday she looked for flowers
and today she looks for a vase.” When you add “ing” to “look,” it becomes “looking” which means the
action is ongoing in the present. For example, “She is looking for a vase right now.”
Try adding special endings to make new words yourself!

Narr a tor: A wise old Roo ster sat in a tree
to roost. He flapped his wings and let out a
long, loud crow. He was just a bout to tuck

There was a flash of red
fur and a long snout. It
was Fox, on the ground
