Tea with a Bee
by Terri Jenson

As I sit be neath a tree
And sip my cup of neat, sweet tea,
I see a bu sy, buzz ing bee
And watch him flit from tree to tree.
What if he lands u pon my knee?
Or leaps in to my cup of tea?
I think it best for me to flee
And drink my tea – far from the bee.

President Lincoln had a tremendous influence on the United States when it
was still trying to figure out how to build a democracy as a young nation. A
democracy is a government where the people vote for their leaders–not like
a country that has a queen or king or one that has a tyrant–one who rules
everything on his or her own. Lincoln made this expression that describes
democracy famous: ”of the people, by the people, for the people.”

A Famous Saying

First, ask students to read the saying. Ask them what they think it means. Next, ask them if there has
been a time when they have thought carefully, or not thought carefully, before acting.

Look be fore you leap.
Have students read the famous saying a couple of times and then do Write It, saying
each sound as they write the words.

Ask students, “Can you recall the spellings of the /ee/ sound? Do you
remember the Key Sentence for /ee/ about the scarecrow? Where do
the /ee/ sound words in the saying above belong on the previous /ee/
Sort It page?”

Flex It
DIRECTIONS:

The spelling “e” can be two sounds: /ĕ/ as in “red” and /ee/ (also known as /ē/) as in “she.” Sometimes
you have to try one sound and if it doesn’t work, try another sound. We call this “Flex It.” Read these
words with the “e” spelling. Sort them by which sound of “e” they have.
