Vowel + “e” Sound
Do you remember the separated spelling of /oa/: o_e as in “note?” The separated spelling of
/ee/: e_e as in “these?” In this spelling pattern, another letter (or two) separates the first vowel
from the letter “e.” Most often, the sound is the name of the first vowel. We call this “the sound
that is separated.” Some teachers call this silent “e” or magic “e.”
Let’s focus on this pattern to help you read it more quickly in new words. Below are words without
the final “e” (also known as CVC words). Then the words are transformed, or changed, to words
with the separated “e.” Let’s read them! Then select 4 pairs of words to write below.

under the spellings like this: cake

ba ker’s man.
Bake me a cake as
fast as you can.
Pat it and shape it and

And bake it in the o ven

To day it is hot, so we swim at the lake.
It is not safe to swim a lone, so Mom
or Dad is with me all the time.
When it gets late, we ride our bikes
back home. I am tired, so I am glad
that the lake is close to our home.
I can’t wait to go back to the lake
next time!
