Here’s a way to play “Steal It” remotely with your students!! I send the child this version of the game via email. The cards are smaller than the usual cards! I also adapt the words for the child’s needs and abilities.
I get the parent to print it out and the child to cut it up. There are 3 cards with the numerals 1, 2, 3 to indicate how many cards they can steal, instead of picture cards. It’s in B&W and on 2 pages to save toner & paper.
To play the game, the child holds up the first word to the camera and says it & places it on the table in front of them. They then hold up a word for me to say. I have my small white board in my lap and I write down the grapheme and put the child’s initial above it for their ‘pile’ and my initial above it for my ‘pile’ to keep track. So if their word is ‘play’ I write down ‘ay’ & their initial. If my word is train, I write down ‘ai’ and my initial. If they then get ‘rain’ I rub out my initial above ‘ai’ and put their initial above it. So I am keeping up with who owns which pile as the game proceeds. It’s a bit slower than usual BUT the child is fully engaged and is sorting the words out for both of us! 🙂 If I “capture” a pile that belongs to the child, they hold up all the word cards in front of the camera for me to read one by one. 🙂
At the end of the game they count up how many cards on their piles and then count my piles and we deduct the ‘numeral cards’ from the totals to see who is the winner!
